Blu-Thrust Z80 Thruster is a high-performance underwater propulsion unit designed for ROVs, USVs, and other marine propulsion systems. Engineered around a brushless outrunner motor optimized for direct-drive operation, it delivers strong, responsive thrust in a compact and mechanically robust form factor. The thruster is rated for operation to 300 m / 984 ft, making it suitable for a wide range of subsea and near-offshore applications.
The motor assembly features selective resin encapsulation combined with protective surface coatings, providing electrical isolation of critical components while allowing effective heat dissipation during operation. This design enables direct water contact around the rotor for cooling, while safeguarding internal windings and electrical interfaces from water ingress. Rather than relying on full encapsulation, the Z80 balances protection and thermal performance to support sustained use in demanding underwater environments.
The Z80 incorporates a tool-free snap-on rear cap and an IP2X-compliant front weed guard, allowing rapid access for inspection, cleaning, and maintenance between dives. Its rugged housing and modular external components are designed for field serviceability and straightforward integration into custom vehicle platforms.
Electrical Characteristics & Control
The Z80E’s integrated trapezoidal ESC is configured for stable, repeatable operation across the usable speed range. With appropriate ramp settings, it supports smooth startups, controlled throttle transitions, and reliable directional changes—helping avoid overly abrupt current steps on the vehicle power bus during dynamic maneuvers.
The thruster is available in two versions to suit different system architectures:
- Standard Version (Blu-Thrust Z80) — 170 KV motor with a 3-core power cable for external ESC integration. Ideal for users requiring independent control systems or custom drive electronics. A dedicated external ESC board will be available soon for this model.
- Built-In ESC Version (Blu-Thrust Z80E) — Incorporates an integrated trapezoidal ESC within the housing, simplifying wiring to Power ( + ), Power ( – ), and Signal lines. This version features a grey shell for quick visual identification while maintaining identical external dimensions and similar thrust performance to the standard version. By placing the ESC directly inside the thruster body, the Z80E reduces the number of separate boards required inside the main enclosure—freeing up internal space for batteries, control electronics, and payload hardware—while also improving thermal placement by coupling ESC heat directly to the thruster body and surrounding water instead of concentrating it inside a sealed electronics bay.
